Upcountry Maui offers a peaceful escape from the island’s bustling coastlines, nestled on the slopes of Haleakalā. Known for its cooler temperatures, scenic landscapes, and charming towns like Makawao and Kula, this region showcases lush farms, botanical gardens, and panoramic views.
As you ascend into Upcountry Maui, golden beaches transition into rolling hills and misty mountains, all nestled on the slopes of Haleakalā, the island’s tallest peak. Historically, Hawaiians cultivated taro and sweet potatoes in the fertile volcanic soil of these fields. Today, visitors can explore farm tours, visit a goat dairy, or enjoy locally produced wines and spirits in the charming towns of Kula and Makawao.
Upcountry is also home to the paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboys, a tradition that began in the 19th century when King Kamehameha III invited vaqueros from California to teach locals how to manage cattle. Further east, the towering 10,023-foot Haleakalā watches over the "Valley Isle," offering breathtaking sunrises and landscapes that seem more lunar than earthly. It’s a striking contrast to the coconut palms of Kāʻanapali and Kapalua, but a day spent in Upcountry reveals a deeper connection to Maui’s heartland.
Many visitors rise early to make the drive to the Haleakalā Visitor Center, the prime spot to witness what is often considered the most breathtaking sunrise on earth. As the sun breaks the horizon, a stunning display of color and light unfolds over a vast sea of clouds, a spectacle once described by Mark Twain as “the most sublime spectacle I have ever witnessed.” Equally mesmerizing are Haleakalā’s sunsets and the brilliant, star-filled skies that emerge after dark. Keep in mind, the National Park Service now requires a reservation for personal and rental vehicles to view the sunrise from the summit area. This reservation is for parking and does not cover the national park entry fee. The drive from Kāʻanapali or Wailea to the summit typically takes about two hours.
The fertile fields of Kula are perfect for sparking your appetite with a farm tour. At ʻŌʻō Farm, you can harvest your own vegetables and have them turned into a fresh, gourmet meal by the chef. At Hawaiʻi Sea Spirits Organic Farm and Distillery, stroll through sugar cane fields and raise a glass to sustainable farming with their OCEAN Vodka. For a floral experience, enjoy the sweet scent of lavender and sweeping views at Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm, or explore the protea at Shim Coffee and Protea Farm. Kula is also home to the vibrant Kula Botanical Gardens, featuring carnations, birds of paradise, and orchids.
Perched on the mid-slopes of Maui’s Haleakalā volcano, Makawao blends its plantation-era roots with a vibrant arts scene. Once recognized as one of the top 25 arts destinations in the U.S., this charming town is the largest in Upcountry Maui and is renowned for its Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo. Since the late 19th century, paniolo have been herding cattle across Maui’s expansive upland fields. Every Fourth of July, the Makawao Rodeo—Hawaiʻi's largest paniolo competition—celebrates this heritage with traditional rodeo events like barrel racing and calf roping, all with a Hawaiian twist.
For a taste of local flavor, join the line at T. Komoda Store for their iconic cream puffs. Opened in 1916 by Japanese plantation worker Takezo Komoda, this bakery is a beloved institution. Arrive early for the freshest goods, but note that the bakery is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Makawao’s charm extends to its eclectic shops, boutiques, and art galleries, where you can watch local artisans at work, from glassblowers to wood sculptors. The town is also home to Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center, offering art classes and free gallery exhibits. With its rich paniolo history and flourishing arts scene, Makawao is a must-see on your Maui journey.
